As soon as the intestine no longer contains any food particles after emptying, the metabolism changes. The body first supplies itself with its carbohydrate reserves. Then it falls back on protein and fat deposits.

In traditional fasting, there is no solid food on the menu. Instead, decoctions of vegetables, fruit juices, teas, and water are used. To make a vegetable decoction, bring a liter of water to a boil. Chop one beetroot, one tomato, and one carrot each and add to the water. Then add a teaspoon each of black cumin seeds and turmeric to detox your body. Also, add a bay leaf, a juniper berry, and a clove. Simmer on low heat for 30 minutes. Drain the broth through a fine sieve, remove the solid ingredients. Enjoy one or two plates each for lunch and dinner. Drink 100 milliliters of fruit juice in the morning. And: drink three liters of fluids throughout the day (for example, one-third unsweetened tea, two-thirds mineral water). Do this for five days. Important: Those who fast can also rest. Daily walks (20-30 minutes) stimulate the metabolism.

Step by step back to solid food

At the end of the fast, the body has to get used to solid food again gradually. Therefore, eat grated apples or pureed vegetables in the first two days, for example to detox your body. Particularly important: chew slowly and thoroughly. This stimulates digestion, which is still restricted at the moment.

Refraining from fasting is not for everyone. A gentler alternative is what is known as detoxing. Solid food is allowed to detox your body. How about a delicious smoothie, for example? Puree a banana, half an avocado, 100 grams of spinach, and a handful of sunflower seeds. This can be used to replace meals.

Help with problems

Due to the unfamiliar situation with therapeutic fasting, minor difficulties may arise. What you can do about it:

Poor concentration

An ear massage is suitable for activating body energy. To do this, rub the edges of the auricles simultaneously for about 30 seconds with your thumb and forefinger.


A foot bath with mustard flour (pharmacy) stimulates blood circulation and stops the symptoms from progressing. To do this, put two tablespoons of the flour in a large bowl and fill it up with lukewarm water to detox your body. Soak your feet in it for ten minutes, then wash off. Caution: mustard oil can irritate sensitive skin.

Circulatory problems

You may occasionally feel dizzy while fasting. The reason for this can be a slight hypoglycaemia. Then dissolve a teaspoon of honey in a cup of tea and drink it. In acute circulatory problems, those affected should sit or lie down and raise their legs.

Stomach pain
