If you no longer want to use your PayPal account, you can either leave it idle or delete the account. In this guide, we will show you how this works and what you need to consider when deleting your PayPal account.
Reasons to delete PayPal account
If you do not want to use your PayPal account at the moment, you do not have to close it yet. An unused PayPal account can also be continued free of charge. There are no fees or interest on existing credit.
If you would like to have a PayPal account under a different e-mail address, for example, because you no longer use the current one, you can simply change the e-mail address. You can find out how to do this here: Change your PayPal email address.
If you had a business account and want to delete it because the company or trade no longer exists, you should delete your account. We’ll explain how to do this below.
Close PayPal account
You can easily and easily delete your PayPal account online. With PayPal, this action is called ”Close account”. You do not have to write a letter of termination and send it to PayPal.
However, your account may not be deleted immediately. Therefore, prepare the account deletion first.
Prepare account deletion
In order to delete your PayPal account, you have to make some preparations. If you do not do this, account deletion is often not possible. You then lose valuable time.
Take care of these points:
Withdraw credit: debit any remaining credit to your bank account. This transaction takes a few days before the account can delete.
Wait for payments: If purchases are still open, the amount must first have been properly debited from the account or credit card. It is not possible to delete an account beforehand.
Balance your account balance: If your account balance is in the red, you must first pay the difference to PayPal. A PayPal account with a negative balance will not delete.
Remove bank details: Remove all stored bank and credit card details from your PayPal account. To do this, open the “Credit” page.
Remove eBay connection: Remove the link to eBay, i.e. your eBay member name.
Instructions for deleting an account at PayPal
The PayPal account can delete online itself. You do not have to contact PayPal customer service for this.
How to delete your PayPal account
- Go to www.paypal.de and log into your account.
- Click in the menu at the top right on the gear symbol and then on ”My Profile”.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on “Close Account”.
- Confirm that you really want to close, i.e. delete, your PayPal account.
- Select a reason for the account deletion. You can also leave a comment. Confirm again with ”Next”.
- Confirm the deletion for good.
